Did you know tooth decay, also known as cavities, is the second most prevalent disease in the United States (the common cold is first). Tooth decay occurs when plaque, the sticky substance that forms on teeth which includes bacteria, combines with the sugars and starches of the food we eat. This combination produces acids that attack tooth enamel. The best way to prevent tooth decay is by brushing at least twice a day (preferably after each meal), flossing daily and going to your regular dental checkups. Eating healthy foods and avoiding snacks and drinks that are high in sugar are also ways to prevent decay.

Xylitol is a healthy sugar for your teeth!  Sugarless gums of any kind can help boost dental health, because they stimulate saliva production and can help cleanse teeth. But those sweetened with xylitol – a type of sugar extracted from a variety of plants – can actually battle tooth decay, because xylitol works against Streptococcus mutans, the bacteria that causes tooth decay. Xylitol is available as a general sweetener at health stores.  Brands of chewing gum that contain Xylitol: Spry, Xponent, Xylichew and some types of Trident.

Another great "food" for your teeth is actually a drink:  Water!  When it comes to oral health, water is indispensable. It’s the primary component of saliva, and is important to both tooth and gum health. Water is valuable as the final rinsing agent for foods and sugary drinks, and, if fluoridated, works to prevent tooth decay by strengthening tooth enamel.
